For those of you who think hats are for other people, Detail Therapy is here to prove otherwise. This brand’s bespoke millinery combines craftsmanship, character and colour to help even the most hat-averse find their perfect fit

Some people look great in hats. Their baseball caps seem to have been specially moulded to their heads. They look so cool in beanies they could easily be mistaken for an off-season surf pro supplementing his income with a few runway shows. When the sun’s out, these folk think nothing of tripping about with their trilbies tipped at an alarmingly self-confident angle.

Spare a thought, then, for the more cranially challenged among us for whom the thought of wearing a hat brings us out in a cold sweat. Not only are we unable to find headwear that actually fits, but why on earth would we want to draw attention to ourselves with something bright and bold perched upon our head? That’s just madness.

It’s not so crazy, however, once you know about Detail Therapy, the South African accessories brand run by head hat honcho Gadi Messinger. Tired of searching for a fabulous fedora that would fit, Messinger took matters into his own hands, designing a hat for himself that was so admired he had no choice but to make a business out of it.

This he has done, and very successfully too. There is a huge selection of Detail Therapy hats online, but you can also work with Messinger to create something bespoke. What we love most is his range of fabrics and colours – there’s no chance you’re going to see the same hat anywhere else; personalising your design with feathers and ribbons, or even embossed lettering means that you’re going to stand out from the crowd – but in a wonderfully understated way.

This is masterful millinery – Messinger’s craftsmanship is so good that you know that this is a hat that’s going to last a lifetime (or until your friends nick it).
