ADVERTORIAL
Buying and selling a house is not just a property process. Kennan Properties is an agency with a social conscience: it believes its environmental advice for homeowners and house sellers plays an important role in encouraging a more environmentally friendly lifestyle
Since 2006, Kennan Properties has expended a great deal of energy encouraging Zimbabwean homeowners to adopt a more environmentally friendly style of living. As well as helping people buy and sell homes, it offers its clients invaluable advice on how to make a lasting difference to their lifestyle – and the environment too. “We really want to strengthen people’s connection with nature,” says Marje Kennan (below). “By encouraging homeowners to practice water-harvesting and recycle waste products we can work towards the ultimate goal of a zero-waste lifestyle.”
WASTE NOT, WANT NOT
Kennan Properties runs a city-wide recycling scheme, its branded bins can be seen all across Harare. Collecting plastic, paper, cans and cardboard, the bins are emptied every week and the waste is then sorted and recycled. There are recycling bins at its offices on Borrowdale Lane for its staff and clients to use, as well as a recycling cage at Pomona Food Market (below) that is sponsored and managed by Kennan Properties.
BE WATER WISE
As we all know, the scarcity of water is a huge problem in Zimbabwe right now. Kennan Properties advises new homeowners, as well those building their own houses, on the various methods of rainwater- and grey-water harvesting. Not only can these innovations increase the value of your property, they also achieve plentiful water supply which is especially useful during the dry seasons.
SAVE THE PLANET, SAVE YOUR DOLLARS
As the cost of living continues to rise in Zimbabwe, people are increasingly on the hunt for new ways in which to keep their household budgets down. Creating your own market garden and growing your own vegetables is a great way to do this. “Many people think you need a large plot of land to do this,” says Marje, “but actually you can grow a surprising amount in a really small space. Living off the land is a great way to live more self-sufficiently,” she continues, “plus you are cutting out the cost of all the environmentally unfriendly plastic packaging that our food is wrapped in.”
GROW YOUR WAY TO GOOD HEALTH
By eating fruit and vegetables that you’ve grown yourself not only can you be certain of your food’s provenance, but you can control the use of fertilisers and pesticides. both of which can be harmful to your health. “Organic, home-grown food tastes so much better too,” says Marje. “And by reducing the time between farm and table, there is less need for the use of unhealthy preservatives to keep your food fresh. It’s a win-win.”
“As a company we are dedicated to providing the best property service for our clients,” says Marje, “and we hope that our focus on community-minded and environmentally friendly practices can help them to get the most out of their property, both in terms of value and self-sufficient living.”
