TRENDS
At this year’s Decorex show in South Africa, the focus was on being courageous with colour and texture. Colour, Materials, Finishes Consultant Laura Tofts picks her top trends of the year
TREND
Playful colours
Sera Holland’s artwork “Palette Cleanser” is exactly that: a refreshing placement of delicate pastels alongside vibrant high-chroma colours. Don’t be afraid to put light against dark, even if the colours are so starkly different. This year, you need to be brave.
TREND
Sprayed sheet metal
One of the highlights at Decorex was the beer brand Sol’s collaboration with a group of furniture and lighting designers. In the “Sunny Side” collection, bare wood, woven string and bubblegum colours were all strong, but I loved these re-purposed metal buckets the best.
TREND
Natural-fibre light fittings
These hand-crafted pendants from design company Modern Gesture are a wonderful statement of sustainability. I loved this Decorex display, especially how the lights are beautifully framed by the burnt orange wood-panelled backdrop.

Hand-crafted tiles
These Akashic vintage tiles, made by hand in Knysna, Western Cape, are intricate and detailed, their craftsmanship setting them apart from the mass-manufactured tiles we’re so used to. The striking colour combination again reflects the popping, playful colour scheme that’s going to be big this year.
